Litterbox Cake

(originally published in “Catnip”, published by Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine)

Cake Ingredients

Serving Dishes

1 package white sandwich cookies

1 new litterbox

1 box spice or German chocolate cake mix and 1 box white cake mix

1 new cat litterbox liner or 1 glass baking dish that fits in litterbox

1 large package vanilla instant pudding mix

1 new plastic pooper scooper

few drops of green food coloring

Sheets of newsprint (optional)

12 small Tootsie Rolls (R)

Prepare and bake cake mixes according to directions in any size pan. Prepare pudding mix and chill. Crumble cookies. Add a few drops of green food coloring to 1 cup of cookie crumbs. Mix with fork; set aside.

When cake is at room temperature, crumble into a large bowl and toss with half of the remaining cookie crumbs and enough pudding to make the mixture moist. Put liner or glass baking dish into litter box and pour in mixture.

Unwrap 6 Tootsie Rolls(R) and heat in microwave oven until soft. Shape ends into slightly curved points and bury the rolls decoratively in the cake mix. Sprinkle remaining white cookie cumbs over the mixture then scatter green crumbs lightly over the top. Heat remaining Tootsie Rolls (R) and decorate the top.

Place box on a sheet of newspaper and serve with the scooper.
